Dorit Chrysler: Confronting Creativity with Andre Cholmondeley
DORIT CHRYSLER is a composer, synthesist, singer, educator, sonic adventurer, and one of the world’s leading thereminists. Hailing from Graz, Austria, and based in New York City and Berlin, she is the co-founder of the New York Theremin Society and founder of the first school for theremin, Kid CoolTheremin School.
After forming her first new-wave band at 13, she went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Musicology at age 18 in Vienna. Moving to NYC, she fronted several groups until embarking on a solo career in 2000. Her global itinerary finds her creating concerts, soundtracks, workshops, pieces for MOMA, or in performances with orchestras including several with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. Chrysler has performed worldwide from CBGB’s and Lincoln Center in NYC, to Coachella and the London Royal Art Academy.
Dorit is the founder of “Dame Electric”, a festival dedicated to female pioneers in analog and electronic music. In 2020 she premiered new works for theremin written for her by Laurie Spiegel. The same year, as artistic director of the NY Theremin Society, she helped produce and release Theremin100, a compilation featuring thereminists from 18 countries, in celebration of the centennial of the instrument.
A documentary on Dorit is currently being produced by Texan film maker Cressandra Thibedaux, and features Dorit’s recent concerts in Russia, Japan and China.
